The Khama Rhino Sanctuary in Botswana, where our image was taken, provides a safe haven for white and black rhinos as well as other animal species. The large volume of drugs may be a limiting factor with this. For adult white rhinoceros, 160 mg butorphanol + 10 mg medetomidine gives standing sedation in 68 minutes and recumbency at 1215 minutes. Zoos and wildlife preserves are working to educate people and save the magnificent animals from extinction. Combining IM butorphanol with either medetomidine or azaperone 6,13 is a good alternative when immobilizing a compromised white rhinoceros. Poaching and trophy hunting take a toll on all rhino populations. Whether or not the story is true, some prefer to call it the 'square-lipped rhinoceros' rather than the white rhinoceros. Instead, 'wijd' means 'wide' in English, and was meant to describe not the colour of the rhino, but the shape of its mouth, which is wider than the mouths of other rhino species. Carfentanil citrate based combinations have also been used to a lesser extent. The story goes that Dutch speakers (and later, Afrikaans speakers) in South Africa used the word 'wijd' to describe the rhinos, which English speakers understood to mean 'white'. Captive rhinoceros species are most frequently sedated and/or anaesthetised with the potent opioid, etorphine hydrochloride in combination with an alpha-2 adrenoreceptor agonist or the butyrophenone, azaperone. A mistranslation may have given rise to the name.
